Constructing a Snail Pen.

To me, this is the most important step in snail farming because if you get this right, you are about 50% gone in setting up your farm.

Why is this? This is so because snails are among the easiest animals to grow.

If you can give a snail a favourable and secure environment, then you should be ready for snail population explosion in a matter of few weeks.

Population explosion in snail farming is expected because snails has male and female sex organs within itself. It can therefore mate itself. It can also mate with another snail. The result is massive egg production.

Snails are slow in movement but they are extremely mobile. Hence, your snail pen must be completely sealed not allowing the snails out and stopping any intruder in.

Feeding Snails with the right Feeds

Good Snail Feeds and Forbidden Snail Feeds

To discuss this topic, I start with an illustration on how to kill a snail painlessly.

To kill a snail, get some lime, slice them and boil them. Pour the liquid on the snail and the snail will be dead almost immediately.

This illustrates the forbidden feeds of snails. They include: lime, orange, oil, salt, garri, petroleum liquids (kerosene etc),

Other enemies of snails (not feeds) include: millipedes, centipedes, flies/worms from flies, ants (particularly the red ants, rodents and some species of snails

Good Feeds for snails are: watermelon, pawpaw and its leaves, pumpkin leaves, cabbage, carrots, green peas, cucumber, any food you eat (but without salt and oil) etc

Snails grow slowly but there are formulated feeds for snails that will help them grow fast. I will be organising a training on this and other issues shortly. Pls indicate your interest to book a seat for you.

How to Feed Snails
Put feeds in feeding trough for your snails. Give them water in troughs but do not let the soil in your snail pen be wet.

Seven Steps to Start a Lucrative Snail Farm

Here are the steps or procedures to follow to Start a Snail Farm:

1. Get space in your compound or elsewhere. Build a pen (can be in small size or big) depending on how much space and budget

2. Know your source of snail. You cannot just go to the market and buy snail because they may not be viable. We can help you get viable snails.

3. Know the cost of snail, construction of pen, feeds and other logistics

Know the sources of snail feeds. They are cheap or sometimes free. E.g. watermelon, pawpaw leaves and fruits, pumpkin leaves etc. There is also formulated snail feeds which we can help you get

5. Have your farm records - income and expenditure book

6. Know how to manage the health and safety of your snails e.g. keep flies, ants, millipedes, rodents away plus hygiene practices

7. Know when and where to sell your snails.

The above 7 steps of how to start a start a lucrative snail farm are very important. If you develop them well, you already have feasibility report for your snail biz. You can tender this to financial institutions   or investors if you want to upscale your farm.

There is huge market for snails but snail farmers are extremely few. This is market that makes you almost a monopolist
